April 5, 2013 [Your Letters, Sexual Purity]

We have now been married close to 25 years and are still very much in love (ok – I admit he drives me crazy sometimes and sometimes he gets sick of me for a day or two – but we have never faltered or wavered in our deep loyalty and love for each other).  I completely agree that this allows for a more contented view of marriage.  Isn’t it always the way though….that when we follow God’s path it leads to peace and joy and the ability to weather the storms.

One aspect that I like to encourage others in – is to ensure that the intimacy of your marriage is not broken through flippant talk about this private part of your marriage with others.  Don’t get me wrong, I believe that in Godly fellowship with friends we can encourage one another and even assist each other with problems of a delicate nature, but this should not extend so far as to give someone outside the marriage intimate details of our sexual relationship.

This is a precious gift that we cherish. Our physical relationship is a joyous secret shared and experienced only by my husband and I.  A great benefit of being virgins and keeping the sexual relationship private is that it stops the enemy from infiltrating the relationship with thoughts such as doubts and insecurities.

My husband has not been with anyone else, so therefore I don’t have to worry about how I might or might not measure up.  There is great freedom in this. How I wish that young Christians today could understand this simple thing…that to wait is worth it!  Today’s society is all about instant gratification and our media is so highly sexualised that we have become desensitised.  Let’s keep encouraging one another to swim against the tide and experience the freedom that comes with a life lived in step with God’s word.

Blessings,
Rachel
