Just Tissue

In October, 1978, I found out I was pregnant. Without much thought, I visited a Planned Parenthood facility in Houston, Texas, to get an abortion–thankful I had that “option” because of Roe v. Wade 15 years earlier. The abortion hurt. A lot. Just a “little D&C procedure” I was told. Just elimination of some tissue. A few years later, I remarried and had a son I cherished. I longed to have more children, but scarring in my fallopian tubes, either from the abortion or sexual activity before I was married, caused the fertilized egg to become trapped in one of my fallopian tubes, and burst it. Two years later the same thing happened in the other fallopian tube and all my hopes and dreams for more children were gone. I was now infertile.

Only decades later, after becoming a born again Christian, did I begin to learn that “tissue” removed from my womb wasn’t a blob, it was a child. My first child. A child with arms and legs, a torso, a head, a beating heart. The doctor had used a suction tube that ripped apart my small 8 week old baby, piece by piece–and then crushed his or her little head with forceps so it could go through the suction tube.

It is possible to see ultrasound videos on the internet of this tragic procedure, as well as horrific photographs of the remains of these mutilated children. Rather than post those, however, I’ve carefully selected two videos that do not minimize the truth but are appropriate for all audiences, including teens. I hope you will watch them and share.  The first is a series of brief testimonies of women who have had abortions, some decades earlier, and a call to life. The second is a presentation to high school students using real instruments in a physician’s reenactment of how an abortion is performed in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester, without showing a mother, child, or blood.

God’s Word is a message of love. When He says do not have sex apart from marriage, when He says “do not kill” it isn’t a call to prudish self-righteousness from a harsh God. It’s a call to life, love, peace, and joy, from the One who created us and knows us best. After you’ve watched these, be sure to check out the powerful video testimony by Voddie Baucham about his mother, single and poor, who chose life.

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life anddeath, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live (Deuteronomy 30:19).

(The photo at the beginning of this post is of my now 7 month old granddaughter, the child of my son. Life is a gift of God.)
