In Dad’s Hands

May 29, 2012  – [Your Stories – email from Melinda, GEW study group member] “Yesterday had been a crazy busy day for me, to the point that I was not organized enough to have dinner ready in time, and my baby breastfed and asleep before leaving for our group meeting. Normally in such a circumstance I would give my husband all sorts of detailed instructions like, “If the baby cries for this long do this.” “Make sure the kids have this before they go to bed.” “If the baby needs to feed before I get back, the formula can be found here,” etc. etc. Last night, however, I flew out the door without a word of instruction. When I came home I asked him how it went. I was nervous because I was expecting a commentary of complaint, and a guilt trip.

Instead I had the most precious conversation with my husband: he told me that he couldn’t get the baby to sleep so he had topped her up with some formula which had settled her just fine and she had fallen asleep quite easily. The oldest (who normally hops out of bed numerous times before reluctantly falling asleep) had gone to bed without a hassle, and he had sat our son down to give him a lecture about his bossiness. Now I know that doesn’t sound like a particularly interesting conversation, but what struck me was the mood the conversation had taken.  My husband was SHARING and ENGAGING with me; and in that moment I understood that because he had the room to lead the events on the evening IN HIS WAY, he wasn’t bitter with me about the experiences he had to go through.

I know I still have a long way to go, and I need to fight against old urges on a daily basis. But I am so thankful to God that He is giving me these moments along the way to reinforce to me that I am on the right path. Thank you! Melinda K.
